Forgotten

This is one of my favorite paintings—not just for how it looks, but for the story it holds.

I’ve spent countless hours running the shoreline in the boat, scanning the edges of remote reefs and beaches. Every now and then, we’d come across a skiff that had broken loose in a storm. It would be half-sunken, filled with water, battered from being tossed against rocks. Dents, scrapes, maybe even a hole. Barnacles and mussels clung to the bottom like nature’s quiet reclaiming.

I always found those moments haunting. That little boat maybe had once been someone’s lifeline—used, trusted, maybe even loved. Once well used and now "forgotten", a ghost of its former purpose, resting in the wild.

When I painted this piece, I wasn’t just capturing a scene—I was honoring that quiet narrative. The resilience of the skiff, the rawness of the coast, and the way Alaska holds onto stories in its own silent way.

It’s a reminder of how nature reclaims, how time softens even the hardest edges, and how beauty often lives in what’s been weathered.
